A New Chapter for Green Oilfields: EXENCELL and Qinghai Yicheng Launch Solar-plus-Storage Pilot Project in Plateau Oilfield

2026-03-16

Release Date: March 12, 2025

Project Location: Qinghai Province (Oilfield Area)

Driven by the "Dual Carbon" strategy and the ongoing energy transition, the oil and gas production sector is accelerating the integration of clean energy alternatives with conventional power grids. Recently, a solar-plus-storage system project in a plateau oilfield, with core equipment supplied by EXENCELL and local implementation by Qinghai Yicheng, was officially commissioned. The project adopts a 50kW/100kWh integrated photovoltaic and energy storage system, providing green, reliable, and economical power for oilfield operations and marking a new exploration in clean energy utilization for oilfields.

Why Do Oilfields Need Solar-plus-Storage Systems?

Oilfield operation areas are often located in remote regions with weak grid coverage, traditionally relying on diesel generators for power. This leads to high fuel costs, logistical challenges, and significant carbon emissions. Moreover, diesel generators require complex maintenance and their reliability is constrained by equipment conditions, making it difficult to meet the stringent demands of continuous oilfield production.

With the deployment of a solar-plus-storage system, oilfields can achieve:

  • Solar Priority, Reducing Fuel Consumption:During the day, solar power directly supplies oilfield loads, with excess energy stored in the battery system, maximizing the displacement of diesel generation and significantly lowering fuel procurement and transportation costs.
  • Energy Storage Regulation, Ensuring Stable Power Supply:The energy storage system smooths solar fluctuations and provides continuous power during nighttime or cloudy days, ensuring uninterrupted operation of critical oilfield loads and enhancing energy autonomy and power reliability.
  • Peak Shaving and Load Shifting, Optimizing Energy Costs:By leveraging time-of-use tariffs or diesel generation cost curves, the storage system charges during low-load periods and discharges during peak demand, further improving overall energy economics.
  • Environmental Adaptability, Tackling Plateau Conditions:Designed for Qinghai's high altitude, low temperatures, and sandstorms, the system features enhanced thermal management and protective designs to ensure stable operation under extreme conditions.

Technical Highlights: Plateau-Customized Integrated Solar-Storage Unit

The core equipment of this project is the 50kW/100kWh integrated solar-plus-storage system independently developed by EXENCELL, specifically engineered for off-grid or weak-grid scenarios such as oilfields and mines:

  • High Integration:Integrates solar inverter, power conversion system (PCS), lithium iron phosphate battery, energy management system (EMS), and environmental controls into a compact unit, facilitating transport and rapid deployment.
  • Intelligent Energy Management:The built-in EMS automatically optimizes solar generation, load demand, and battery status to achieve coordinated solar-storage operation, supporting remote monitoring and maintenance.
  • High Reliability and Safety:Adopts automotive-grade battery cells and a multi-level protection architecture with over-temperature, over-voltage, and short-circuit safeguards; validated through high-altitude and low-temperature testing to operate reliably from -30°C to 50°C.
  • Plug-and-Play Configuration:Standardized interfaces and modular design reduce on-site installation and commissioning time to within one day, minimizing disruption to oilfield production.

Core Technology: EXENCELL 280Ah High-Performance Battery Cell

At the heart of this project—the 50kWh/100kWh energy storage system—lies Exxon Excellence Energy Storage's independently developed 280Ah lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cell. Serving as the system's "power core," this cell endows the entire system with exceptional performance:

Prismatic Cell (ELEPHENTA)

Ultimate Safety: The cell adopts a highly stable material system and multiple safety design features, combined with an intelligent thermal management system. This ensures optimal operating temperatures even under complex conditions such as high summer heat and cold, humid winters, fundamentally preventing thermal runaway risks.

Extended Lifespan: With a cycle life exceeding 8,000 cycles, it guarantees stable operation throughout the project's entire life cycle, significantly reducing long-term maintenance and replacement costs while securing sustained returns for customers.

High Energy Density: Within the compact footprint of an outdoor cabinet—appearing as an unassuming gray unit on site—it achieves a high-capacity storage of 50kWh/100kWh, perfectly adapting to limited factory space without the need for new electrical rooms.

Localized Services, Empowering Energy Independence

Qinghai Yicheng, as an enterprise deeply rooted in local oilfield services, leverages its extensive experience in engineering implementation and maintenance under plateau conditions. It is responsible for infrastructure construction, equipment installation, and long-term upkeep. The collaboration achieves a seamless "product + service" integration, offering oilfield customers a one-stop energy solution from design to long-term operation.

Towards Green Oilfields, Co-building a Zero-Carbon Future

The successful commissioning of this project marks a solid step for EXENCELL in special application scenarios and provides a replicable benchmark for the clean energy transition of Qinghai oilfields and the national oil and gas industry. Looking ahead, EXENCELL will continue to collaborate with industry partners, driving green transformation in energy production and consumption through innovative technologies and reliable products.
